In invited plenary presentation by Shinobu Yoshimura, *Petascale Finite Element Simulation of Real Worlds Complex Structure with Billions DOFs Model* at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering 2015, Salt Lake City

- The balancing domain decomposition method (Mandel, 1993) was used to analyze the damage in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
- The simulations used the K computer, the fastest computers in the world as of June 2011, and up to 10 billion degrees of freedom (that is, equations and unknowns)
